Many of the mountain pastures are farmed. This is where Tyrolean cows traditionally spend their summer holidays. At some of the pastures, or Alms, you can observe how fine cheese is made from fresh milk.
In quaint Alpine huts, hikers tuck into bacon and homemade farmer's bread to help keep them going for the kilometres to come; two or three Schnapps, on the other hand, tempt them to stay for a while.
The hiking season begins shortly after the snow has melted and doesn't finish until skis are being strapped on.
